I was asked to be part of Sun Smart's Love Your Body Blog Carnival . So to celebrate Summer coming around the corner & my love for a good floppy hat and crazily shaped sunnies I made this wee stop motion movie. Hope it gets you in the mood to love your summer and your skin!

I've always been fair, as a teenager I longed for a golden tan but the kiwi sun always got the better of me. By the time I was in my early 20's I'd finally learnt my lesson. I'm never going to get a natural tan! I'd gone through enough after sun lotion, painful showers, sleeping sessions lying on my back & embarrassing tomato face moments I'd had enough! Now I embrace my lily white outer layer & if being sun smart means I can wear a gigantic 60's inspired floppy sunhat and some sweet cat eye sunnies like the ones in the video then I'm all for that! Special thanks goes to Lauren for being a super smart smiley model!

I love colour, I love it to brighten my winter days & put a rose in my cheeks. At L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival this year the colours were surprisingly out in full force. I say surprisingly due to Melbourne's extreme passion for black, black and more black in the darkest season of them all.

My faves? Bright blues, greens & reds not to mention the crowd's take on colour.

I ventured off, as you do, to the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival a wee while ago. A little taste test of Karen Walker's SS2011 collection really tugged on my heart strings - particularly the refreshingly yellow a-line skirt and her pretty accessories and floral trousers. She made me want to pack my bags and jet off to Paris for a Spring time rendezvous. Paris Runway 6 was hosted by the lovely Frankie magazine - thank you Frankie!

I often have conversations with people about photoshop. For me a moment should be captured in it's natural way, using your skills as a photographer to make the most of available light & your camera. I believe this is honest & real photography. Simple is best. Time is better spent observing and shooting and this is how I become most inspired and learn to perfect my craft as a photographer. Scott Schumann of the blog the Satorialist ( who I had the pleasure of meeting at his book event) has the same idea, to shoot something and create the most beautiful image in the most simple way.

In Melbourne, tourists can ride in a horse and carriage around the city. I never really take much notice of them but the other night while walking home from an art show I stopped and watched for a while. It makes me a little sad that these horses have to work so hard in the middle of a bustling city, nonetheless they are still beautiful.

I was invited to Feiyue Shoes Australia launch last night by my friend who works for street and sneaker loving magazine, Acclaim. A bunch of creative types were commissioned to take Feiyue sneakers and turn them into glorious pieces of art. The origami crane made out of sneakers was my favourite..すごい!

yes that is a hamburger made of shoes...I didn't try it though, apparently the patty was a bit rubbery.

Cook Book

I went to a cook book launch for Cook Book north/south. The book was entirely printed by hand on letter press giving it a very unique feel, quite different from the glossed up pages of today's cook books. The books were not bound , in fact they were simply separate pages sandwiched together by wooden plates - like the recipe cards from way back when.

Each section of the book was dedicated to a suburb in Melbourne - all with their own unique flavours, cultural influences and ingredients. Along with each suburb came a story - an anecdote from a resident of that suburb, and the recipes came with a story too. For me I liked the details of the pages, the little motifs under the recipes were super cute :) truly a special book for any Melbourne food lover.

A few days ago I went to along to the Fully Six exhibition at the Guilford Lane Gallery. The exhibition was to showcase 6 young and up and coming Australian artists. Was particularly impressed with photographer Tom Blachford check out his sweet video below. Also loved Dawn Tan's gigantic marshmellow sculpture, nom nom nom... One of the artists Jessica Hyde makes fabulous stationary which you can buy at Rose Street Markets or at her online shop!

I loved this artist but for the life of me can't remember their name (& google doesn't seem to want to help).

The Chapel Street Bazaar is just that...it's bazaar. The massive junk shop/ vintage shopping warehouse/ retro haven provides plenty of nostalgia and a good excuse to fill in 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon. While I got incredibly lost in all it's vintage glory I did discover some rather delightful bits and pieces amongst the nooks and crannies...makes me wanna move to 1963 but then come back to 2010 so I can share it with ya'll!

The old fashion mags from the 60s were my favourite.

I took a trip to Prahan for some Sunday shopping and shooting (not that kind of shooting the photographic kind) delights. My favourite wandering detour was to Greville St which I only just stumbled upon the other day. It's lined with cute little vintage shops and boutiques - a sweet find was Blue is Bashful . Their ultra kawaii accessories, textured fabrics and not to mention the fact that they stock UK label Nadinoo makes them extra special in my book.

It was a dark stormy night...Melbourne's fashion lovers and elite ventured inside the town hall and were hit with a giant colour explosion thanks to fashion students of RMIT.

Designers in order of appearance : Kasia Gorniak (poofy green & pink numbers) Jessica Slade (yellow dress), Cindy Wei Zhang (royal blue & white ensembles), Holly Simpson (blue draping), Sarah Kirby (geometric pink body suit & top), Jason Hewit (yellow geometric dress)

Hair Expo Gala Highlights

I've been meaning to blog some more about the hair expo in Sydney last month. This is the first time I'd been to such an event. It really was a hair raising (hadehaha) experience. Basically it's an event where guys and gals from the hair industry (& make up industry peeps too) come together for one big sha bang of a weekend to promote their products. In the evenings massive gala events are held where teams of hair stylists represent their salon and create the biggest and bestest most out there hair creations (now I call them creations because they really are works of art). It's a prestige thing, the winner is the king or queen of the hair castle and gets to carry the hair expo trophy. Have a look at some of the creations & back stage prep.

Kimono Hime - a magazine love affair

When I left Japan I wanted to buy myself a present with the book voucher I won during a staff end of year party. I'd saved that voucher for over a year and when the time came to spend it I wanted something worth keeping , besides , I couldn't read well enough to buy a Japanese book anyway.

I found Kimono Hime on the magazine racks amongst the anime and cutesy teenage mags. Kimono Hime is a magazine dedicated entirely to the beautifulness of kimono. I love love love this magazine so much, especially the design and photography not to mention the countless kimonos that leave me in awe of this Japanese national costume.

While living in Japan I saw hundreds of kimonos and yukata (summer kimono) and the most beautiful thing about them was that I never saw two that were the same.

Cut back to 2010 where I was delighted to find Kanga Kanga in Bourke street who could supply me with my Kimono Hime copies. The latest one arrived last week. Unfortunately it doesn't come out regularly , only once or twice a year, so this kimono fanatic will have to be patient...or go ahead and order all the issues I've missed out on! Until then, have a peek into the pages Kimono Hime. (please excuse the poor quality pictures ... I don't own a scanner )

At the moment I'm sifting through my thousands and thousands of pictures after a whirlwind of a week in Sydney for Australia's most fashionable 5 days of the year. I'll endeavour to get through them all and bring you a nice little selection shortly...in the mean time let me share with you this little gem from backstage, love the ribbons on the shoes, don't you?

Fashion week is in 2 days! There are so many exciting things happening. I'm going to be absolutely flat out so blog/twitter/facebook/e-mails are going to be put on hold until I get back and recover from fashion madness.

I'm off to Sydney tomorrow and in the middle of packing, I can usually manage to squeeze a weeks worth of items into 7kilos of pure carry on baggage bliss. Trips to and around Japan, Chile, and fitting 2 months worth of gear into my backpack for Europe have turned me into a super duper packing pro.

Even though Sydney is only a small hop skip and a jump away I've found blogger Lady Melbourne's travel tips quite handy when packing for the week of fashion madness. Thank you Lady Melbourne!

SO I got my fashion week schedule and it's very very busy so for now...until things quieten down I shall put the 30 instant days project on hold because gurl's gonna need to carry the least amount of extra cameras as possible!!!

I recently did a job for Tokyo based t-shirt company visible elephant 47. The pics are on the way to the Japan, in the mean time some random shots from the shoot as we speak. We had so much fun doing it-especially the night time shoot riding around on a chopper bike in the dark is a blast!

We used the model's dog Woody, also a great model and was very interested in my camera...tehehe

I went for a trip to Mornington Peninsula and could not find my camera ANYWHERE. So as a consolation I snapped this picture instead...I wore this hat all day in the sunshine. Later, my Mum (who's visiting from NZ) discovered the camera under a pile of scarves.

A little birthday celebration with friends=a cake that collapses because you failed to put it in the fridge and due to it's chocolate moussey consistency it turned into a flop but was delicious.

Today is my birthday, and today I also begin my new personal photo project "30 instant days". I will take a photo every day with my instax mini camera and post them on this blog for your viewable pleasure.

I chose to start from today because (a) it's my birthday- a monumental point in time & I'm also getting a scanner to scan all my dreamy instant film pictures (b) there is a lot to look forward to over the next 30 days ... you'll see and (c) April is the time when Summer turns to Autumn...so I guess there will be a lot of changes over the next 30 days...some good, some bad...but who knows?

We'll only find out as the project progresses....

disclaimer: Today's photo will come tomorrow, until then I've posted an alternative and I may not upload a photo every single day....because of technical restrictions or pure laziness haha (non commitment from the first day?!) but I will take a photo every day regardless. I promise.

L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Week 2010

I had the privilege of photographing Melbourne Fashion Festival last week for the website Thescene. What a fun and amazing experience, I mainly shot runway as backstage access was restricted.

While I was at the festival I caught up with photographer Wendell Teodoro who let me use his amazingly huge and fantastic telephoto lens (see portrait shots of the models on the runway). Thank you Wendell for all your fantastic mentoring and teaching skills. My photographic heart is full.

As a bit of an insight, I thought I would give you the low down on what happens when you're photographing these things:

Step 1: Arrive at venue at least half an hour before show and pick up media pass

Step 2: Find a seat in the "pit" (where all the photographers sit, it's usually at the end of the runway). Some media have their spot marked out so be careful not to stand on those spots. front centre is great and up high is best.

Step 3: Set up your gear, adjust camear settings, test the light, chat to other photographers.

Step 4: Guests will start to arrive, red carpet photographers will take pictures of celebs, designers, fashion elite and socialites and these people will get shown to their seats (VIPS and media in the front row -depending on their status)

Step 5: The show is about to start: get your camera up and ready and start shooting!!!

Step 6: Shoot shoot shoot! Shots must be sharp, clean and centred oh and & feet must be down

Step 7: Scour the place for left over goody bags, review your pictures and send to your editor!

Step 8: get very little sleep ready to do it all again the next day or night

An exciting 6 days led to these pictures and millions more, enjoy!

I've been to a lot of exhibition openings lately (like this one). It seems that the same hipster crowd attend, I wonder if they go for the art...or just to be seen?

A little disappointed by the lack of free beverages, I focused on the beautiful ceiling.

I'll come back for the art work when there aren't so many people...

I'm good at making up words aren't I?! It was pouring with rain tonight so I decided to take a rainy stroll. With umbrella in tow I was noticing all the pretty shop fronts and how they seem so different when the open sign is twisted around and noone is about. There's something to be said about shops after hours-a slight aeryness and glow about them. The pleated top in the Red Cross second hand store (or vintage if you want to sound a wee bit sophisticated) and it's polka dot neighbour looked so cute together they deserved a photograph.
